This year Ace organized its maiden inter-college fest, held at the Nepal Academy Hall. “Bajaj Pulsar Expressions 2009”, The 2 day mega event was well received with the participation of 16 colleges of Under-graduate and Graduate level and a host of sponsors.
The fest was inaugurated by Mr. Rajendra Khetan (Chairman - Khetan Groups of Industries) and Mr. Anil Shah (CEO – NABIL Bank). The event was a fusion of entertainment and learning. We had a broad category of competitions - Management and Wit games, Fine arts, Music/Dance Competition and a Fashion Competition.
Apart from these events, stalls were set up at the premises of the venue by: PacAsia, NABIL Bank, Management Dynamics, Broadlink, Ace Institute of Management, Jamb Technologies, Samsung, Kumari Bank, Bank of Kathmandu, VERVE, and BOSS. Separate stalls were also set up and managed by our students for Food, Bingo, Dart and Face Painting.
The first day of the event kicked off by a hilarious round of “Mad-Ads”. Participating teams exhibited their creativity blended with humor by advertising an unusual product. It was an all out laugh riot. This round was judged by Mr. Subu Shrestha (Business Advantage) and Mr. Ranjeet Acharya (Prisma Advertising), both experts in the field of Advertising.
Rangoli, painting and cartooning competitions testing the artistic skills of students were held simultaneously at different halls followed by a dance competition. Contestants presented a number of dance items varying from classical, modern western to salsa. The judges for this round were Katia Warnet and Rohit Saood from the Salsa Dance Academy.
On the management centric side, the “Best Manager” was selected based on one’s individuality, wit, adaptation to different situations, decision making skills and personality. Furthermore, we had the “Event Manager”, a game designed to assess the individual’s management skills. Participants were judged for creativity, time planning, and ability to work under budget constraints.
Adding to the fun, “spin a yarn” competition was held wherein the participants were to weave a story and make it as funny as they could. Also, we had a debate session in “two men and a boat”, in which participants were to oppose themselves. They were to first speak for the topic and then against the same topic.
Simulating a real stock market, the “stock game” was a real test of the teams’ knowledge of the stock market. Teams were required to buy or sell their stock and maintain their trade alongside price fluctuations. A NEPSE desk was also set up to facilitate and certify each transaction.
Completing the series of management games, was the classic “case analysis” competition requiring logical reasoning, calculation and a little running of the horses of the mind.
Day 2 of the inter-college fest commenced with sketching, collage and calligraphy competitions. The highlight of the day was the music competition. Each band was to present two gigs – one song and one instrumental. Most of them played cover of popular songs while some presented their original composition. They were successful in keeping the mood of the audience intact. This was evident by the fact that they were roaring “once more”. Band members in rock-star attire, the 70’s rock n’ roll to modern day punk rocker hairdo and the instruments with the effects added up to the spirit of the rock show. This segment was judged by Mr. Nirakar Yakthumba, Mr. Dev Rana and Ms. Preeti Kaur.
All eyes were set for the much anticipated “fashion competition”. The competition had dual themes. One, the 70’s show and the other was free style. A cocktail mix of good music, ramp spirit, style and of course “the outfit” made it spectacular. Contestants sported different styles in the second round ranging from western (casual and formals) to traditional Nepali Daura surwal and Gunio cholo.
As a final treat to the audience, we had Karma Band performing live. They rocked the audience with their most popular numbers like ‘Yanmaya’, “hukka mero”,‘chhaina maile timro..’ and much more. The crowd was swaying along when the band played ‘timro maunta ma’.
With this grand performance we successfully convened our very first inter-college fest with the intent to induce learning through games and also to give students an opportunity to break free from the academic chores. |
